2011 CAROLINA PANTHERS REVIEW:
The Carolina Panthers had a rough go in 2010, going 2-14 and finishing at the bottom of the NFL. Now, with a new coach in Ron Rivera and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton under center, the Panthers are looking to return to the playoff conversation in the NFC South.
Though the Panthers have several options at quarterback, including a pair of second-year players and veteran Derek Anderson, many believe Newton will start very soon, as he is among the most physically gifted athletes in the NFL. Regardless of who starts, they will be joined by solid running backs in Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams, both of whom are reliable options. Wide receiver Steve Smith is also one of the most explosive pass-catchers in the NFL.
Though the offense certainly needs to step it up from last year, that is even more the case with the defense. The front four is still reeling from the loss of Julius Peppers to the Bears last season, and have yet to find a suitable replacement. Instead, they will rely heavily on the young linebacking corps to form an identity in hopes of pleasing Rivera, who had been the defensive coordinator in for the Chargers and part of one of the best defenses in history–the 1985 Bears.

The Carolina Panthers play in the South Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The Carolina Panthers were founded in 1995 along with the Jacksonville Jaguars as part of that year's NFL expansion. The team would be coached first by Dom Capers, who managed to lead the team to a conference championship in just his second season. After failing to improve on that season, Capers was replaced by successful 49ers coach, George Seifert, who also failed to lead the Carolina Panthers back to the playoffs. In 2002 John Fox became the Carolina Panthers third coach and in his second year led Carolina to the Super Bowl, but lost the game to the New England Patriots. Carolina made the playoffs again in 2005, but injuries and off-field problems with the team have hampered what many considered to be strong championship contender. The Carolina Panthers are fighting to get back to playoff form.
