The Flames are an NHL that started out in Atlanta in 1972 and relocated in Calgary in 1980. Almost immediately after moving to Calgary, the Flames became more successful and were postseason regulars throughout the 1980’s and the first half of the 1990’s.
The Flames made their first ever Stanley Cup finals in 1986 by defeating the St. Louis Blues in 7 games in the Conference finals. The Flames lost the Stanley Cup finals in 5 games to the Montreal Canadiens. The Flames made the Stanley Cup finals once again in 1989 and this time they had more success, defeating the Montreal Canadiens in 6 games to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. The Flames only Stanley Cup finals appearance since 1989 came in 2004 when they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 7 games. Although the first half of the 2010’s were rough for the Flames, they made the playoffs in 2015 and made it to the Western Conference semifinals, renewing fans faith in the team.
