After spending nearly 20 years as the Hartford Whalers, the organization moved to Carolina and changed their name to the Hurricanes for the 1997 season. Since the move to Carolina, the Hurricanes have won all their division titles. They have totaled three over the years to go along with their two conference championships. The highlight of the franchise occurred during the 2005-2006 season when the Hurricanes won their first and only Stanley Cup title. Carolina defeated the Edmonton Oilers in seven games and they were led by Finals MVP Cam Ward. The rookie goaltender was inserted into the lineup after starting goalie Martin Gerber struggled. The Hurricanes went on to win 15 times during the playoffs after the switch and Ward’s play in the Finals earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy, the first time a rookie goalie has ever won the award. 2014 Hurricanes Season Preview
The 2013 season went very similar to 2012 for the Carolina Hurricanes. The team finished 36-35 and 10 points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. A 5th season without making the playoffs led to sweeping changes for 2014.
In comes new head coach Bill Peters and a whole new outlook for the Carolina Hurricanes. New with him are centers Brad Malone and Jay McClement, as well as Drew MacIntyre and Tim Gleason. Much of the Hurricanes hopes in 2014 will rest on the shoulders of Captain Eric Staal. Staal had a poor season in 2013 and will need to play much better for Carolina to have a chance at moving up the Eastern Conference rankings. He will need plenty of help from returners Jeff Skinner and Elias Lindholm. Expect a new energy from the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014 and for Bill Peters to try anything and everything to shake things up for the team.

Hurricanes vs. Panthers
Hockey in the southeast got a later start then the rest of the NHL, but these two geographical rivals have had some exciting games over the years. The Canes and Panthers became rivals in the late 90s when they finally were in the same division. They’ve been moved again since the 2013 realignment, but it looks like the rivalry will continue on.

Gates at PNC Arena open 1-hour before the puck drops for the general public.

North Carolina is known for having some great southern comfort food. Of the many good southern cooking places we recommend trying Beasley’s Chicken & Honey, Seaboard, or Mandolin. If you are looking for a sports bar try Capital Club 16 or Tobacco Road Sports Café. For great Mexican food check out Fonda Y Birriera Jalisco, Centro, or El Rodeo Mexican Restaurant. If you are a vegan, vegetarian, or gluten free don’t miss visiting The Fiction Kitchen. The Fiction Kitchen has a trendy atmosphere and has amazing holistic foods. Other great options are, Spize Café, Sitti, and Calavera.
Where is the best place to park at PNC Arena?
PNC Arena is surrounded by parking lots on all sides. The general parking lots open 3 hours before game-time and generally run about $15. We recommend trying the West or East lots because they are closest to the two exit roads to help you avoid much of the bottleneck traffic leaving the arena.

Children under 24 months old will be allowed to enter PNC Arena without a ticket and must sit on a guardians lap for the duration of the game. It is highly recommended that you bring proof of your child’s age with you to avoid any last minutes hassles at the gate.

Carolina Hurricanes 1 1
RBC Center: The Inside Story My son and I saw the Carolina Hurricanes on the last game of the 2010-'11 season, and enjoyed ourselves greatly. First of all, there was a front lawn "party" before opening that starts around 4:30 or 5, and he really liked it. It had a couple inflatables, and there were plenty of people I knew. We waited in line for about 20 minutes and got in at somewhere near 6 o'clock. Our seats were in section 325, which looks down directly at center ice. Concessions stands were giving away dollar dogs($1 hot dogs), but everything else was over $4, so eating isn't very cheap(like it is at every other sporting event). Now I can tell all of you about the Carolina Hurricanes. The 'canes' are an off/on quality team who can surprise you sometimes. One year(2008 playoffs), they seemed unbeatable and got swept by the penguins in the conference final. The backbones of the canes this year were Erik Cole(for his many game-winning goals), Eric Staal(who is known for always being the team points leader), and Jeff Skinner(the rookie who put up 60 spectacular points). They lost the game that could have propelled them to the playoffs 6-2 to the TB Lightning, but it was a fun experience. Overall, they may not be the best, but they know how to play a good hockey game. August 8, 2011
