The Colorado Avalanche have been in existence since 1995 after previously being the Quebec Nordiques. The Avalanche had instant success after the move to Colorado. The team won the Stanley Cup in their first season and went on a streak of making the postseason for 10 straight seasons. This was the first time an NHL team won a championship in their first season after relocation. During this stretch, Colorado won their second Stanley Cup title during the 2000-2001 season. They also advanced to the Western Conference Championship six times. Their impressive streak continued with eight consecutive division championships. Organization greats like centers Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg along with legendary goaltender Patrick Roy are huge reasons why the Avalanche had quick success after the move and helped make Colorado one of the more feared franchises for a decade. 2014 Avalanche Season Preview

Patrick Roy has taken the helm in Colorado after leading the club for so many years on the ice, and he’ll have a lot of work to do after a disappointing 2012-13 Season. Joe Sakic has also been moved up the Avs hierarchy, as he was named Vice President of Hockey Operations. Colorado fans feel like they are in good hands coming into the season, and they were able to land Alex Tanguay and Cory Sarich in a trade with the Flames in the offseason. Milan Hejduk is gone from the team, but they are hoping that first round draft pick Nathan MacKinnon helps Avs fans forget all about the loss.

The Avs have a big home stand at the Pepsi Center that begins with a game against the Winnipeg Jets on December 29th. After that comes in the Blue Jackets, Flyers, Sharks, Flames, Senators and Islanders all within an 11-day span. It’s a great month of hockey in Denver and could determine whether the Avs are contenders.

Colorado Avalanche Rivals

Avalanche vs. Red Wings

The conversation on this one always starts with the 1997 brawls at Joe Louis Arena. In the Western Conference Finals in 1996, Claude Lemieux checked Kris Draper from behind and into the boards, breaking his jaw and cheek. The next year on March 26 there were nine fights between the teams. Punches throw, blood spilled and the famous Forsberg-Vernon fight. Patrick Roy was still trying to fight opposing goalies in 2002.

Avalanche vs. Stars

This rivalry was sparked in the late 90s and early 2000s, when both teams were battling at the top of the Western Conference. In 1999, the Stars beat the Avs in seven games and went on to win the Stanley Cup. In 2000, the Stars again beat Colorado in seven. They were primed for another meeting the next year, but the Stars went down early and the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup.

Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup, Western Conference Finals, and NHL Playoffs

The Colorado Avalanche, whose inaugural season took place in ‘95/96 went on the win the Stanley Cup that very year as well as winning it all in 2001. How’s that for immediate success? The Avalanche have already racked up 6 trip to the Western Conference Finals as well as 12 visits to the NHL’s postseason.

What time do gates open prior to an Avalanche game?

Gates at Pepsi Center open 1-hour before the puck drops.

Where are good places to eat before an Avalanche game?

One of the best places to eat in Denver is Wazee Supper Club. Wazee is close to Pepsi Center, is comfortable, and has great pizza and American food. If you like hot dogs with extravagant toppings, try Biker Jim’s Restaurant. For Mexican food lovers try Tamayo or Sam’s No. 3. If you are looking for higher end dining experience try Columbine Steak House & Lounge. Columbine is upscale but not too stuffy and has a great menu. If you are looking to try something new, check out Cheeky Monky. Cheeky has some unbelievable Belgian food that will not disappoint. Other great places in the area are The Breakfast King, FelFel Mediterranean, Marg’s Taco Bistro and The Rackhous Pub.

Where is the best place to park at Pepsi Center?

The closest three lots that do not require a permit are on the east, southeast, and south sides of the arena. These three lots usually fill up quickly and range in price from about $15-$30. To the west of Pepsi center are the Camry North, and Camry South parking lots. These two large parking lots are restricted to permit parking and are only available to season ticket and parking pass holders. On the west side of the Camry lots are three more parking options that are usually around $10 and only a slightly longer walk to Pepsi Center.

Does my child need a ticket to go to an Avalanche game?

Children under 3 years old will be allowed to enter Pepsi Center without a ticket and must sit on a guardians lap for the duration of the game. We recommend bringing proof of your child’s age with you to the gate to ensure they are allowed to enter the game.
