When the Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver and became the Colorado Avalanche in 1995, no one knew just how successful the franchise would become. In their short stint in Colorado, the Avalanche have made 12 postseason appearances, won eight division championships and brought home two Stanley Cup championships.
The Avalanche owe much of their early success to their two Hall of Famers, defenseman Ray Bourque and goalie Patrick Roy. The team's early (and successful) 1996 title run laid a winning foundation for future Avalanche teams to follow.
The Avalanche shocked the professional hockey world in 1996 when the team cruised to the Stanley Cup Finals behind the stonewall defense of Patrick Roy. The Avalanche swept the Florida Panthers in the championship to complete an unprecedented title run. The team would capture another title in 2001 in a thrilling seven game series where Patrick Roy would win his record third Conn Smythe award as the playoff MVP.
In recent years, the Avalanche have continued to make playoff appearances. With a loyal fan base and a competitive roster, the Avalanche expect to be a Stanley Cup contender for the foreseeable future.
