DETROIT RED WINGS POSTSEASON
As one of the NHL's Original Six franchises, the Detroit Red Wings have a long and illustrious history and many consider the franchise to be one of the most successful teams in professional sports. The Red Wings have made the playoffs an astonishing 59 times, won 29 division titles, six President's Trophies and brought 11 Stanley Cups back to the Motor City.
The Red Wings' list of Hall of Famers reads like a who's who list of the best players to ever hit the ice in the NHL. Hockey heavyweights such as Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Sid Abel and Steve Yzerman all donned the red and white Red Wings uniform and brought great success to the squad.
While old timers love to talk about the Red Wings' dominance in the early 1950s, the team's championship in 1997 was a dream come true for fans. Led by Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan and Mike Vernon, the Red Wings were a gritty team that overwhelmed the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Red Wings would follow that up with another championship in 1998 and would win two more in the 2000s.
Detroit fans can certainly hang their hats on years of dominance by their beloved Red Wings who always seem to be at the top of the standings in the playoff race.
