New York Islanders 2011-2012 Season Preview:
Although the New York Islanders finished in second to last place in the Eastern Conference of the NHL in the 2010-11 season, the franchise is on the cusp of something greater. This team, which has been a dominant force in the Atlantic Division in past years, continues to grow as it brings new talent onto the ice.
This year, the Islanders will kick off the regular season vs. the Florida Panthers on October 8. Although they finished with a losing 30-39 record last year, head coach Jack Capuano expects to turn things around, thanks to a number of veterans who will be returning to the ice this season for the Islanders, including Brian Rolston and Andrew MacDonald. Most notably, goaltender Rick DiPietro will be in net again for New York. Throughout his career, DiPietro has been a dominant force for the Islanders and is one of the best American goalies in the NHL.
Three players that are newer to the lineup will be making their presence felt in 2011—Nino Niederreiter, Josh Bailey and Blake Comeau. These three forwards are key to the Isles’ resurgence and the core of their drafting over the past half-decade. If they begin to show their promise in 2011, then the New York Islanders are a team that can surprise the Eastern Conference.

The New York Islanders play in the very competitive Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was established on Long Island in the small town of Uniondale, New York in 1972. Intended to represent all of New York - city and state - the team has drawn its biggest support from the New York Burroughs and suburbs, and Upstate New York, even Connecticut. After some moderate success in their first seasons, the Isles mounted a dynasty run at the Stanley Cup from 1980 to 1983, even managing to hold young Wayne Gretsky scoreless in the entire '83 Stanley Cup Finals series against Edmonton. After their dynasty, the New York Islanders managed some success but has struggled to regain their championship form.
The New York Islanders play their home games at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. The arena holds more than 16,000 hockey fans and is widely considered one of the toughest and loudest arenas in the NHL. With a blue-collar reputation for competition and with a fan base outside the glamour of the city, an Isles game is a tough and noisy experience for visiting teams.
