PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
The Pittsburgh Penguins were one of six expansion teams added to the NHL in 1967 and they quickly turned into a postseason contender. With 25 playoff appearances, six division championships and three Stanley Cup titles to their credit, the Penguins are a consistent threat in the postseason race each year.
The team's first trip to the 1970 Conference Finals was thanks to the stellar play of star winger Michel Briere. In recent years, the Penguins' 1991 and 1992 championship teams were comprised of Hall of Famers Mario Lemieux, Paul Coffey, Ron Francis, Joe Mullen and Bryan Trottier.
After a rebuilding period in the early 2000s, the Penguins once again returned to the big dance in 2009. With young phenom Sidney Crosby, goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and high-scorers Evegni Malkin and Jordan Staal, the Penguins were pitted against the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals. After home teams won each game of the series, the pivotal Game 7 was hosted in Detroit where the Penguins prevailed with a 2-1 victory.
The Penguins are arguably one of the most talented teams in the NHL, so they should be in the thick of the postseason race for years to come.
