TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING POSTSEASON
The Tampa Bay Lightning got their start 1992 and are relatively young by NHL standards, but they have come out of the gate swinging and already have significant playoff success to their credit. The franchise has made the postseason six times, won two division championships and hoisted a Stanley Cup championship banner in 2004.
In a short time, the Lightning have established themselves as an aggressive and high-scoring team in the regular and postseason. Over the course of the 2000s, the Lightning have relied on the strength of young stars like goalie Nikolai Khabibulin, centers Vincent Lecavalier and Brad Richards and winger Martin St. Louis to provide leadership and savvy throughout the high-pressure environment of the playoffs.
The Lightning shocked the NHL world in 2004 by posting the best record in the Eastern Conference and easily rolled through the New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers. In the Stanley Cup Finals, the Lightning would be pitted against another upstart - the Calgary Flames. After a back and forth series, the Lightning won Game 7 at home, 2-1, in front of a raucous Tampa Bay crowd.
With general manager and Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman at the helm and an impressive core of talent, the Lightning are eager to repeat their championship performance of 2004.
