Winnipeg Jets 2011-2012 NHL Preview:
The hockey team formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers, the Winnipeg Jets, arguably have more to prove this season than anyone in the National Hockey League. The franchise changed its name earlier this year and has since moved to Winnipeg, Canada, to cater to the thriving fanbase. In the 2011-12 regular season, ice hockey enthusiasts can expect to see plenty of talent in the rink.
A number of veterans are expected to make their debut in Winnipeg and give the franchise a chance to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including Mark Stuart, Blake Wheeler and Nik Antropov. Head coach Claude Noel will also bring valuable experience to the team and assist them in their effort to make their first appearance in the playoffs in years.
In 2011-12, expect the Jets to be a contender in the Southeast division. Although the Capitals have maintained a stronghold on first place over the years, Winnipeg will bring unique talent that could rival any of their rivals.
Prior to moving to Winnipeg from Atlanta, the Jets had success in the postseason, winning a division championship in 2007. With a new fanbase and a roster full of skilled players, the Jets are likely to be a threat in the Eastern Conference this season.

The Winnipeg Jets play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was formed in 1999, as the Atlanta Thrashers and brought hockey back to Atlanta since the Flames left for Calgary, Alberta in 1980 to become the Calgary Flames. History repeated itself in 2011, when the Thrashers departed the city for Winnipeg, becoming the Winnipeg Jets.
The team's short history was marred by a car accident injuring one star player and killing another in 2003.
The Winnipeg Jets play their home games at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The modern arena opened in November of 2004 and holds around 15,000 hockey fans. MTS Centre replaced the Winnipeg Arena, where the original Winnipeg Jets franchise played between the 70's and mid 90's. It's unique red brick exterior façade is a nod to Canada's historic "Eaton's" stores, one of which was demolished to make way for construction. Visitors may enjoy a visit to the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame housed on the main level.
