Detroit Red Wings 2009-2010 NHL Preview:
The Detroit Red Wings are looking to regain the Stanley Cup at the end of the 2009-2010 NHL season. Detroit lost the Stanley Cup in 2009 when the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated them in a 4-3 series. The offseason continued to beat on the former champs, when the Red Wings lost a few key players to free agency. But the past is past and Detroit once again looks like one of the teams to beat in the Western Conference. The Red Wings will be led by Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom, which makes Detroit a threat every time they step on the ice. Expect big things from the Red Wings this year, including a possible trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.

With a stellar playoff record and four Stanley Cups in the last 15 years, the Detroit Red Wings are both one of the league's most storied franchises and one of the top teams to watch today. While the Detroit Red Wings have lost some players in trades in the off-season, they've quickly filled all the voids left behind. The team has started this season on fire. A game at the storied Joe Louis Arena this season will be incredibly exciting as Detroit Red Wings fans look for their team to win their division and play for another Stanley Cup.

Detroit Red Wings play hockey in the Central Division of the Western Conference of the (NHL). The Red Wings were founded in 1926 as the Detroit Cougars, one of the “original Six” NHL teams. The team changed its nickname to the Falcons in 1930, as they struggled to find success. After merging with an AHL team from Chicago and changing the name to the Red Wings, the team began to win, getting its first Stanley Cup in 1936. The team would be a contender from then on, especially once legend Gordie Howe joined the team in 1946. Howe would help the Detroit Red Wings win 4 Stanley Cups. The 1970's were a dismal era in Detroit hockey, but their fortunes would change when the Wings drafted Steve Yzerman in 1983. With Yzerman and Sergei Federov, among others, the Red Wings would win two more Stanley Cups in the ‘90s and dominate their division nearly every year.

The Detroit Red Wings play their home games at Joe Louis Arena in “Hockeytown” - Detroit, Michigan. The arena holds more than 20,000 spectators. Walking through the west entrance, known as the “Gordie Howe Entrance”, you won't be able to ignore the hockey history that you're now a witness to.
