SAN JOSE SHARKS 2011-2012 SEASON PREVIEW:
The Sharks’ start to the 2010-11 season was a disastrous one for a team many picked to win the Stanley Cup. After stumbling out of the gate and eventually falling to the 12th in the West, they righted the ship and eventually finished 2nd overall. They would knock out a rival Kings team and the Red Wings from the playoffs before getting booted by Vancouver, but the team knew that changes had to be made if they were going get past the Western Conference Finals.
They decided that Minnesota was a one-stop shop for them, picking up Brent Burns and speedster Martin Havlat from the Wild. How they will replace the now-current Wild players Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi remains to be seen—their ceilings aren’t as high, but the Havlat and Burns duo bring a sense of physicality and speed that wasn’t on the team before. With Logan Coture pegged to fill Setoguchi’s skates, the team is looking to finally make the run for the Cup with a cupboard filled with one of the most talented rosters in the NHL.

The San Jose Sharks play hockey in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League. The franchise was formed in 1991. After an Oakland team was fielded in 1967, but failed to succeed financially, many worked hard to bring hockey back to the Bay Area. The San Jose Sharks were one of the worst teams in the league for their first two seasons, a common theme for expansion teams. In 1993, however they managed one of the biggest turnarounds in NHL history, making it to the second round and beating Cup favorites, the Detroit Red Wings. The San Jose Sharks have improved nearly every year, reaching the conference finals in 2006. The current team is both one of the youngest and largest in average size in the NHL. The team is a favorite for a big playoff run.
The San Jose Sharks play home games the HP Pavilion, also known as the Shark Tank. The arena has a capacity of more than 17,000 and a home game this season will be electric with the hopes of the community for the team's first Stanley Cup.
