WASHINGTON CAPITALS POSTSEASON
The Washington Capitals were established in 1974 and after a few up and down periods over the years, the team looks to finally have the pieces to put together a serious championship run. The Capitals have made the playoffs 21 times, captured seven division championships and made one Stanley Cup Finals appearance.
The Capitals struck gold by acquiring Hall of Famers Dino Ciccarelli, Ron Langway and Mike Gartner, who played an enormous role in the team's playoff success. More recently, Capitals fans' eyes have been on Alexander Ovechkin, who has already won the Hart Trophy twice since entering the league in 2006.
The Capitals' only trip to the Stanley Cup Finals came in 1998 after the team netted the third seed in the playoffs thanks to a stellar year by goalie Olaf Kolzig and scorers Peter Bondra and Adam Oates. After knocking off the Ottawa Senators, Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins, the Caps found themselves overmatched by the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals and were swept in four games.
While Capitals fans are still waiting for their first championship, they have arguably the greatest player in the NHL in Alexander Ovechkin and a solid core of talent that should make them a yearly contender in the postseason race.
