The state of Oklahoma has a thriving culture that would likely surprise anyone who mistakenly assumes that it's full of nothing but vast wheat fields and stockyards. The urban center of Norman, for example, with a close proximity to Oklahoma City, is known as one of the most pleasant places in the country for permanent living. CNN/Money Magazine ranked Norman as the sixth best small city in the United States in its 2008 issue. However, this doesn't mean that out-of-towners will be unimpressed.
Serving as the backbone of Oklahoma athletics, Norman is home to the University of Oklahoma, which features one of the nation's most talented football teams. The UO Sooners, who have won seven NCAA Division I championship titles, took their name from the nickname given to settlers who jumped the gun on the 1889 land rush that put the state of Oklahoma on the map. Many of the original settlers claimed their property in present day Norman.
Many football enthusiasts would be wowed by the fact that the College Football Hall of Fame is located in Norman. This prosperous college town also hosts a championship baseball team, women's softball, gymnastics, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, track and field, rowing, volleyball and wrestling (which is also very popular in the Sooner State).
Those who would rather experience the festivities of Oklahoma culture can participate in the numerous free festivals and community events that Norman is known for. Anyone with a taste for history can attend the Medieval Fair, which features time-relevant games and art displays. The Norman Music Festival is also growing in popularity every year, progressing into an all-weekend endeavor. Musicians of all genres, whether local or international, take part in the festival each year. Two other popular festivals, such as Groovefest and Jazz in June, occur every year near the university.
Oklahoma visitors might be surprised to realize how much there is to do in the area. Automobile enthusiasts can feast their eyes on antique models at the Historical Route 66 Museum, which is merely an hours' drive to the northwest. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy the nearby Glass Mountain State Park or the Black Kettle National Grassland, which are landmarks of the Great Plains.
