Although many golf enthusiasts might only associate Pebble Beach with the famous golf course, it's actually a thriving community full of upper class residents and awe-inspiring scenery. Located along central California's rugged Pacific Coast, this vacationer's paradise is owned mostly by the Pebble Beach Company, making it a full-fledged resort town. It also offers a level of seclusion that many people find rather enjoyable, providing a quiet and peaceful aura for tourists and residents alike. Some of the town's most popular residents are Clint Eastwood, George Lopez, Alan Shepard and Charles R. Schwab.
Pebble Beach's prestigious status immediately attracted golfers from all over the country, making it a household name. Though many people might mistakenly assume that there is only one prominent course in town, there are actually seven public and private 18-hole courses. The Links at Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill and Poppy Hills are public courses that tourists flock to regularly. Some of the most renowned private courses include Cypress Point Club, Monterey Peninsula Country Club, the Dunes Course and the Shore Course. There is also a par-3 course known as Peter Hay. Pebble Beach Golf Links was the site of the U.S. Open in 1972, 1982, 1992, 2000 and 2010. One nationally-known tournament visitors can count on every year is the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Another feature that's unique to the area is the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance auto show, which focuses on classic cars with a particular marque each year. Aside from serving as an exhibit, this event also fosters an auction, tour and a special automotive art exhibit.
What interests visitors the most about this area is the striking rock formations and cliffs along the beach, which are often randomly dotted with Cypress Trees. The Lone Cypress along the coast, for example, serves as a symbol of the community. Any avid photographer would surely think he died and went to heaven. This is also the habitat of many endangered plant species, including Hickman's potentilla and Yadon's piperia.
Anyone who wants peace and quiet will likely fall in love with Pebble Beach, as its captivating qualities can easily inspire one to use his or her life savings to retire there.
