Its rich history and unique culture make it a jewel of the south and there seems to be a new attraction and experience waiting around every corner.
The Hartford Whalers moved to Raleigh in 1997 and changed their name to the Carolina Hurricanes. As a result of their move, the city built the stunning new PNC Arena, which is home to most major sporting events, conventions and concerts. The Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup in 2006, so they have already made many warm memories for North Carolina hockey fans.
Raleigh is home to professional sports teams in lesser-known leagues, such as the Carolina Railhawks FC in the North American Soccer League. Additionally, nearby Durham is home to the Durham Bulls, the Triple-A baseball affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. Raleigh is also the location of North Carolina State University, so there are plenty of men's and women's athletic events taking place during each semester.
Aside from sports, Raleigh has a thriving arts and entertainment scene that has plenty of potential for music and legitimate theatre fans. The Lincoln Theatre is one of the most popular small concert venues in the city, with an intimate setting that offers stunning acoustics. The Raleigh Memorial Auditorium is usually a hub of activity as well, with guest speakers, traveling Broadway shows and many other events taking place throughout the year.
When tourists aren't enjoying one of the many events taking place in Raleigh, there are plenty of attractions available to fill up the rest of their schedules. Visitors can explore the expansive North Carolina Museum of Art or take a guided tour of the city on a bicycle or a boat. With its beautiful location, thrilling arts and culture scene and a laid back attitude, Raleigh truly has something for everyone.
