When the Hartford Whalers moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, before the 1997 season, the city promised its new team a state-of-the-art facility when they arrived. The newly-dubbed Carolina Hurricanes got that and more in the RBC Center, which opened in 1999. In June of 2011 PNC Financial Services bought out RBC Bank and was granted naming rights to what is now known as the PNC Arena. The arena is located right outside the city in an area that's dominated by office buildings. While there is very little in terms of bars and restaurants in the area, there is plenty of parking space available, which is used by Hurricanes' fans interested in tailgating. With a capacity of more than 18,500 and a bright and cheery atmosphere decked out in team colors, the PNC Arena is one of the best places in the NHL to catch a game.
The Carolina Hurricanes had a lot of work to do when they moved to Raleigh, as the Carolinas aren't exactly known to be hockey-crazed states. After a few middling seasons, the Hurricanes began to do their talking on the ice and attracted new followers each year as their record steadily improved. The Hurricanes even made their first-ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance in 2002, but they were knocked off by the juggernaut Detroit Red Wings in five games.
The Hurricanes shocked the hockey world in 2006 when they cruised to their first Stanley Cup title in a wholly unexpected run behind the strength of rookie goalie and Conn Smythe award winner Cam Ward and the precision passing and clutch scoring of Rod Brind'Amour and Justin Williams. Even though the Edmonton Oilers pushed the series to seven games, the Hurricanes took home the cup with a 3-1 win.
The PNC Arena's prime location has also made it a go-to spot on the United States concert circuit, and many of today's hottest musical acts have taken the stage. Some of the highest-grossing tours in recent memory have performed at the PNC Arena, including Bon Jovi's Live 2011 tour, Tina Turner's Twenty Four Seven tour, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium tour and Keith Urban's Escape Together World Tour 2009. With its accessibility, ample parking and stunning acoustics, the PNC Arena is a natural choice for a large show.
The PNC Arena is a visual representation of the growth of hockey in the Carolinas, but it has also secured a place as one of the preeminent sports and entertainment venues in the southern United States.
