While it was known as an outlying community of Austin for much of its history, Round Rock, Texas, has become a prosperous city in its own right throughout the past several decades. The area has grown exponentially thanks to its major resident, Dell, which is headquartered there. In 2008, Round Rock was named by Money magazine as the 7th-best place to live in the United States, due to its diverse population and high standard of living. In fact, it was the only Texas city named to that list, proving just how far the metropolis has come in such as short time.
Round Rock calls itself the "Sports Capital of Texas," and a quick glance at the city's public parks and plethora of outdoor activities shows just how true that is. The city is home to the Round Rock Express, a Triple-A minor league squad affiliated with the Texas Rangers of the MLB. The team is owned by Texas pitching legend Nolan Ryan and his son Reid Ryan, both of whom are major owners of the Rangers. The team plays at Dell Diamond, a spectacular minor league complex that lies in the heart of downtown Round Rock. Additionally, Round Rock boasts Old Settlers Park, a sprawling outdoor sports area with golf courses, a twenty-field baseball complex and soccer, softball and cricket facilities.
When Round Rock residents aren't enjoying one of the city's many sporting pleasures, such as Lake Travis's recreational boating and swimming, opportunities are only a short drive west. Additionally, Round Rock is home to a major IKEA outlet store and many other shopping plazas, making the city a commercial hub for much of the Austin metro area.
For those looking for a bit of engaging nightlife and live entertainment, the Texas capitol of Austin is only 15 miles south and is known for its many live music performances, conventions and guest speakers that regularly make their way to the area.
Round Rock's amazing blend of community-building outdoor facilities, prime location and its unprecedented growth make it a must-see for those visiting Austin and may just become an even bigger Texas sports Mecca in the coming years.
