There aren't many cities more closely associated with the West coast than San Francisco. With a rich history, beautiful weather and a culture all its own, this coastal enclave is one of the few cities in the United States that almost qualifies as a must-visit destination. There is certainly no shortage of things to do and places to see.
Part of the appeal of San Francisco has to be the passionate sports fans. The 49ers, one of the most storied franchises in the NFL, have called the city home since 1946. The team has played its home games in the friendly confines of Candlestick Park since 1971, a venue which has seen some of the biggest legends in the sport come through. Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens have all spent time in San Fran.
The 49ers aren't the only iconic franchise based in San Francisco either. The Giants of the MLB have played their home games in the city since they moved across the country from New York City. The Giants got their own park in 2000 when they moved into AT&T Park, one of the most beautiful stadiums in the league. Nestled against McCovey's Cove, this park offers a costal view like none other, and taking in a game is a real treat. AT&T Park is more than just the home of the Giants. The stadium has hosted an NCAA bowl game each year since 2002.
Outside of sports, San Francisco's culture is firmly rooted in popular music. Numerous famous acts have emerged from the Bay Area, including the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Creedence Clearwater Revival.
With such a diverse musical history, it comes as no surprise that the city is also home on of the largest venues for art in the country, the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center. The 7,500 center has hosted everything from opera to symphony to lectures to plays.
While performing arts and sports certainly are everywhere in the city, there are a slew of interesting sights to see as well. From the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge to the one-of-a-kind Lombard Street, which zig-zags its way down the northern tip of the city, any visitor will not be at a loss for things to do.
