Bon Jovi is rock band from Sayreville, New Jersey formed in 1983 by singer Jon Bon Jovi. In the last three decades, the band has been one of the most successful rock bands of all time selling over 160 million albums worldwide. Singer Jon Bon Jovi (born John Bongiovi) grew up in New Jersey and played in clubs there since he was in high school. He tried unsuccessfully to shop demos he made at his cousin’s recording studio in Manhattan, but then managed to get a song on a New York radio station compilation and the song’s popularity took off leading to a record deal. The original guitarist in the band was Bon Jovi’s neighbor Dave Sabo, who would later help found the band Skid Row. Richie Sambora took the lead guitar slot after auditioning and flooring Bon Jovi with his ability to play and how quickly he’d learned the material. Sambora and Bon Jovi would become a larger than life duo for the next three decades.
Bon Jovi’s first self-titled album sold well and got good reviews. Their second album, 7800 Farhenheit didn’t sell as well and wasn’t well received. That failure led to Bon Jovi’s collaboration with pop producer Desmond Childs, and Slippery When Wet, their next album, was a smash success. The band’s success hasn’t really slowed since then. They’ve become well known for huge tours and arena-style performances. Singer Jon Bon Jovi has added to his exposure by becoming a successful TV and film actor.
Bon Jovi has won a long list of awards in the US, UK and Europe, including being inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006.
