2008-2009 Villanova Wildcats Basketball Preview:
After a good push into the NCAA Tournament last year, Villanova is looking to get a little further than the Sweet Sixteen this season.  In what was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the team, they succeeded in going further than anyone imagined.  If that was the case, just think how well poised this Wildcat team is headed into 2009.  Every player will return this season, including some amazing young talent.  Watch for Scottie Reynolds to go wild on some hoops, with entourage in tow.

Villanova first fielded a basketball team in 1920.  The Wildcats rose to prominence under head coach Alexander Severance, who coached the team for 25 seasons.  In Severance's career, he compiled a 413-201 record.  The team won the very first NCAA Tournament game, which landed them in the Final Four.  Severance would lead the Wildcats to four NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT bids.  Paul Arizin played for Villanova under Severance, and he is credited with inventing the jump shot.  In 1985, Villanova would beat the top-seeded and heavy favorite Georgetown to win the National Title in one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history.

The Villanova Wildcats play their home basketball games at the Pavilion in Villanova, Pennsylvania.  The stadium was built in 1985, and seats 6,500 spectators.  For larger basketball games, Villanova plays at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.  The arena also hosts track events, concerts, conventions, trade shows and graduation ceremonies.
