The 2012 Euro Cup comes to Poland and the Ukraine in June & July 2012. The Euro Cup is a tournament between the top football (called “soccer” in the United States) teams in Europe. Sixteen European teams have qualified for the 2012 tournament: Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Russia, Spain, Sweden and the Ukraine. The winning country will be awarded the Henri Delaunay Trophy and will earn a spot in the FIFA Confederation Cup. Spain is the defending Euro Cup champions, winning the 2008 Euro Cup over Germany.
2012 marks the first time Poland or the Ukraine have been selected to host the Euro Cup. All of the Euro 2012 match venues will be in Poland or the Ukraine, where both nations have worked steadily to modernize venues in advance of the tournament. The furthest distance between host cities is 1800 kilometers between Gdansk, Poland and Donetsk, Ukraine. There are only 760 kilometers between the two capital cities, Warsaw and Kiev.
The stadiums for Euro 2012 belong to professional football clubs from those two countries and all have a capacity between 30,000 and 83,000 people. The smallest stadium is Dnipro Stadium in the Ukraine, which holds approximately 31,000 fans. NSK Olimpiyskyi Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine is the largest stadium with a capacity of over 80,000 fans. Because of its size, NSK Olimpiyskyi will host the 2012 Euro Cup Final on July 1st, 2012.
The Euro Cup 2012 includes 7 teams in the top 10 of FIFA’s (Nov 2011) World Rankings:
