Manchester United 2011 American Tour Info:
English Premier League powerhouse Manchester United will be touring North America in the Summer 2011. The Red Devils are one of the most powerful soccer clubs in the world, with such stars as Wayne Roony, Dimitar Berbatov and their newest ascendant star Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez.
This year's tour follows a successful 2010 American invasion, when they traveled to Philadelphia, Kansas City and Houston, where they played the MLS All-Stars. This year, the tour takes them to the Chicago for a game against the Fire (July 23); the Northeast's Gillete Stadium (outside of Boston) to take on the New England Revolution (July 13); and to New Jersey and Red Bull Staduim, where they will again play the MLS All-Stars (July 27).
However, one of the most fantastic soccer surprises ever to hit American shores will take place on July 30th in Washington, DC. That's when the Red Devils will take on the crew from Camp Nou, Spanish soccer powerhouse FC Barcelona. It could arguably be the best collection of soccer players ever assembled on American soil. From All-World player Leo Messi, to Danny Alves, Xavi and Carlos Puyol, Barcelona has many of the players that competed on the Spanish team that won the World Cup and Euro 2008. It's an exciting game that will be the talk of the town for a long time before, and after, the game.
About The Team:
Manchester United was founded in 1878 as the Newton Heath LYR Football club. After facing bankruptcy early on, investments from local businessmen and a name change put MU on the path to become the celebrated team they are today. After the 1905-1906 season, the club was invited to play in the Football League's First Division, where it won its first title in 1908. The following season, Manchester United was victorious in the first Charity Shield, and claimed the team's first FA Cup title.
Throughout the years, Man U has experienced the peaks and valleys of any storied sports team, but has maintained its standing as one of soccer's most influential teams. Since 1986, when he joined on as head coach of the club, Alex Ferguson has built a team with enduring talent and unmatched support from fans around the world. The early 1990's were marked by consecutive League Cup finals appearances, an invitation to compete in the 1991 UEFA Super Cup and the team's first Cup Winners' Cup title, which came in a victory over Barcelona in Rotterdam.
Manchester United's recent teams have shown similar success. Entering the 2006-2007 season, the historic club signed midfielder Michael Carrick, and defenders Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, who still play for the team. The concurrent emergence of forward Cristiano Ronaldo put Man U in position to claim the Premier League title and win the UEFA Champions League Final in subsequent years.
Today's team, led by captains Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, is the two-time reigning champion of the Carling Cup. In the 2010 League Cup Championship, Wayne Rooney's 28th goal of the season with 16 minutes to play was enough to prove his recent dominance over the sport and claim a 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
While the club plays its home games in Old Trafford in Stretford, Greater Manchester, and usually takes on opponents throughout Europe, Manchester United has become an international sensation.
This summer, fans in the U.S. can see the world's favorite team compete against the Philadelphia Union and the Kansas City Wizards before capping off their America Tour against the 2010 MLS All-Stars on July 28.
