2009 U.S. Open Tennis Recap:
After a string of notable matches, the Men's final at the 128th US Open ended in a big upset. Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina defeated 5 time consecutive winner Roger Federer in a match lasting over 4 hours. Del Potro earlier defeated another favorite and Federer's principal rival, Rafael Nadal to reach the finals. He is only the second South American player to win a US Open title.

Kim Clijsters of Belgium, a former world #1 and US Open winner in 2005, entered this tournament unranked as a wildcard and went on to defeat Caroline Wozniacki for the Women's title. Clijsters semi-final victory over Serena Williams was due in part to a widely reported penalty Williams received for verbally abusing a line judge. Despite their troubles on the singles side, the Williams sisters did clench their second US Open Doubles title, their first since a decade before in 1999.

The US Open is the 4th major tennis tournament of the calendar year. It is played each year at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, which is in Queens, New York. The tournament is played on a hard court surface. There are 5 main championships awarded, including; US Open Men's Singles, US Open Women's Singles, US Open Men's doubles, US Open Women's Doubles and the US Open Mixed Doubles Championship. There are two sessions per day during the two weeks of the US Open tennis tournament, the morning session at 11am and a night session at 7pm. There have been some legendary matches during the night session that stretched well past midnight on the East Coast, but that is part of what makes the US Open a unique tournament.

The US Open is a special tennis tournament, and it has certain rules that make it unique among the four tennis majors. First, the US Open plays a tiebreaker in the final set; the other 3 tennis majors require one player to win by two games in the final set. Also, the US Open Tennis Tournament was the first tennis major to use instant replay to review calls. It is available on the two main courts, Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium, and players are only allowed a few challenges per match.

The first US Open was played in 1881 in Newport, Rhode Island. It only included men's singles, and was called the US National Singles Championship. 1968 was the first year the US Open included all 5 championships. 1978 was the first year the tournament was played at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York.

The US Open is widely regarded as one of the most exciting tennis tournaments. The field of over 600 players, always includes the top tennis players in the World. The tournament is played in the shadow of New York City, so Manhattan celebrities are a regular sight. The matches are full of action and drama, often lasting late in to the New York evening. But the electric atmosphere of the crowds at the US Open keep you tuned in whether its morning, noon or midnight. Buy US Open tennis tickets today and experience this great event in-person!
