2008 Texas Football Preview:
Head Coach: Mack Brown
The 2008 Texas Longhorns are ready to fight back up the ranks this season, coming off of a 10-3 record from last year. Coach Mack Brown and the Horns will be missing a few key players this year, notably: Jamaal Charles, Limas Sweed and Jermichael Finley, who largely contributed to the offensive success of the Longhorns last season. With Colt McCoy returning as a junior this season, the Horns can look to the now experienced QB for some crucial tosses in 2008.

The Longhorns will have to best Oklahoma to rout it out in the Big 12 this season. The key for Texas will be whether or not they can bring back their defense. In 2007, Texas sported the seventh worst defense in school history - a figure that will not support a winning streak for the Horns this year, especially as several key offensive players have graduated or moved on to the NFL. Texas is geared-up to go eight straight seasons of 10 wins or more, all you have to do is make it to the game and get your Horns up!

TEXAS LONGHORNS TEAM HISTORY
:
The University of Texas at Austin had it's first football season in 1893.  The team finished 4-0 that season.  Since that time the Texas Longhorns have won over 800 college football games, and rank in top 3 winningest programs of all-time (along with Notre Dame and Michigan).

Texas is a college football powerhouse, with four national titles. From 1936 to 2004, the team finished the season in the top ten 23 times, according to the Associated Press. The Longhorns have had a few different periods of sustained success.  But the Horns experienced their greatest success when Darrell Royal was the head coach.  Texas won three National Championships during Royal's era - in 1963, 1969 and 1970.  Mack Brown coached the Longhorns to their 4th National Title in 2005.

Two Texas Longhorn running backs have won the Heisman Trophy - Earl Campbell (1977) and Ricky Williams (1998). Other former Longhorn greats include: Scott Appleton, Tommy Nobis, Bobby Layne, Tom Landry, Jerry Sisemore, Brad Shearer, Kenneth Sims, Tony Degrate, Doug English, Jerry Gray, Eric Metcalf, Tony Brackens, Priest Holmes, Derrick Johnson, Cedric Benson, and Vince Young.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the UT program was not as strong.  But when Brown came on-board, the program has rebounded, finishing in the top ten multiple times. The Longhorns play home games at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (aka: DKR) which has a seating capacity of over 80,000.  DKR underwent renovations after the 2005 season, adding college football's first High Definition (HD) jumbotron. UT is expanding DKR's capacity to over 90K for the 2008 season.

The Longhorns played their first Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game in 2005 at the Rose Bowl against the University of Michigan. The game was the first meeting between the two storied teams and the Longhorns' first trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl. The Longhorns defeated the Wolverines 38-37 thanks to a successful field goal kick by Dusty Mangum as time expired off the clock.

The following year Texas again played in the Rose Bowl, but this time the game was to decide the National Champion.  UT faced a stacked USC team in the Rose Bowl, that included Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush.  USC came in ranked #1 in the country, and Texas was ranked #2.  The Longhorns were led by Quarterback Vince Young, and eventually knocked off the Trojans 41-38 in the final minute of play.  The victory was the UT program's 800th victory, and earned the school its 4th National Championship.
