Dodie Smith's 1957 novel, 101 Dalmatians has been adapted into 2 feature films, one animated and one live action, and now serves as the inspiration for the new 101 Dalmations Musical. The classic story of Dalmatians Mr. and Mrs. Pongo, their new puppies, and their humans, Mr. and Mrs. Dearly, fioling the plans of London heiress Curella De Vil. Broadway acress Rachel York will play the ionic character, whose original animated film adapation was named as the 39th villian of all time on AFI's list of 100 Heros and Villians.
Written by B.T. McNicholl, with lyrics by B.T. McNicholl & Dennis DeYoung, the production is directed by Jerry Zaks, an experienced Broadway director of over 18 productions, including La Cage aux Folles, Little Shop of Horrors, and Guys and Dolls. The production is said to be seen from the dogs point of view, showing humans as larger than life characters on the stage. The show is touring the United States through June of 2010, and no doubt hopes to find a more premanent home on Broadway for the 2010 fall season afterwards.
