Anything Goes is a classic of the musical comedy genre that has seen numerous revivals both on Broadway and Off, as well as multiple film adaptations, since it first debuted in 1934. Featuring music and lyrics by famed composer Cole Porter, the book underwent revisions during the various revivals over the years, culminating in the most recent staging based on the 1987 revival. These later versions incorporated hit Cole Porter tunes from his other successful works.

Through the multiple revisions, the core story of Anything Goes remains the romantic complications of characters aboard the S.S. "American," en transit between London and New York City. Billy Crocker stows away aboard the "American" when he realizes his would-be love, heiress Hope Harcourt, is aboard. Hope is engaged to another man and Billy, with a little help from his lady friend Reno, has to win her heart. The "American" is filled with other colorful characters whose paths cross with Billy and Hope as their romance unfolds.

The original Broadway production ran for 420 performances at what was then the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre), and starred the legendary Ethel Merman in the role of Reno. It was one of the most successful Broadway show's of the 1930's, leading to the first film adaptation in 1936. The first major revival, and revision, occurred in 1962, Off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre. Over fifty years past before Anything Goes returned to Broadway proper, with the 1987 revival. This production received 10 Tony nominations, winning 3, including Best Revival of a Musical.

A similar reception greeted the 2011 revival. Opening April 7th, 2011, at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, the 2011 revival is based on the 1987 book revisions and song selection. Much like the 1987 production, this version received 9 Tony nominations, winning Best Revival of a Musical yet again. The 2011 revival spawned a national tour and extended its residency at the Sondheim Theatre indefinitely.

Whether on Broadway or on tour, now is a great time to get tickets to see this classic American comedy musical.
