Musicals featuring the songs of other acts have always been thought of as good fun, but not much else. Two such popular outings were Mamma Mia, which featured songs from ABBA's catalogue, and Movin' Out, which was made up of Billy Joel classics. However, when Jersey Boys came along in 2005, it broke the mold. Since the chronicles about the career of the Four Seasons hit the stage, Jersey Boys has been a favorite of both critics and audiences.
The popularity of the show largely stems from the unique way in which it’s told. True to the band's name, the story of their formation, success and eventual break up is split up according to the Four Seasons, each section being narrated by a different member of the band. Soon after the show began its first nationwide tour in 2006, with John Lloyd Young as Frankie Valli and Christian Hoff as Tommy DeVito, its actors quickly rose to fame and Jersey Boys would soon go on to win the Tony for Best Musical, thanks to its impressive storytelling and talented cast.
Of course, the music featured much more than just an intriguing story told in a creative and clever way - the songs are all timeless classics as well. You don't have to be a big fans of the Four Seasons to admit that they produced some of the catchiest songs of the 1960s, and they are all included in Jersey Boys. Act I features some of their early hits including "Sherry," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man." Act II, which chronicles the dissolution of the band features some of Valli's popular solo songs including "Can't Take My Eyes Off You."
Although much of the original cast has gone on to bigger things, the show is still a large draw, and not just in the United States. The show has been performed as far away as Australia, and also enjoyed warm reception in London as well.
It doesn't matter how old you are, the music of the Four Seasons is timeless. And if you were lucky enough to have experienced the band in their heyday, taking in a performance of Jersey Boys may be the next best thing to a time machine.
