Notes: The factory upon which the story is based is still open and producing the footwear in question.

The musical Kinky Boots is based on a true story, one of those stories so unlikely that is has to be true. Aired in 1999, a BBC documentary series profiled a struggling family shoe factory in Northamptionsire and the rather creative way the owner turned the struggling factory around. The story first inspired a 2005 film of the same name, and that film inspired producer Daryl Roth and director Jerry Mitchell to bring the story to the stage.

Roth and Mitchell recruited a who's who of award winning talent, including Grammy winner Cindy Lauper to write the music and Tony winner Harvey Fierstein to write the book. The show debuted to the public in Chicago at the Bank of America Theatre in October of 2012. The preview lasted a month before the production moved to Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre. Previews there began March 3, 2013 and the show officially opened April 4, 2013.

Kinky Boots tells the story of Charlie Price, who just inherited his father's struggling shoe factory. The factory has been in the family for years, crafting solid, dependable men's shoes, the market for which is drying up. Price has the unenviable job of laying off workers who have been there for years, and faces an inevitable closure if a new source of revenue isn't found.

A somewhat unorthodox solution presents itself when Charlie meets Lola, a drag performer who tells Charlie that her troupe of performers regularly deals with broken heels from wearing footwear meant for women. Charlie returns to the family factory and begins producing the titular boots, with reinforced heels that stand up to the demands of Lola's dance routines.

Charlie is not without hurdles to overcome, not the least of which are his own workers who are less than comfortable with the change from Oxfords to high heeled thigh-boots. He and Lola convince them to stay and the family business is saved.

Kinky Boots received critical praise, not to mention a season best 13 Tony nominations. It won 6, including Best Musical. Lauper won for Best Score, making her the first woman to win the category solo. The Broadway production promises to enjoy a long run, and touring productions will bring the musical to cities around the world.

Kinky Boots is more than just the footwear. Don't miss your chance to see two very different people discover what they have in common in Tony's Best Musical of 2013.
