Once began its life as a critically-acclaimed Irish music film starring Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová and was a huge hit at the international box office. The movie would win the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly," and soon the calls for a Broadway adaptation grew louder and louder. By 2011, Once premiered at the New York Theater Workshop and would receive a slew of awards, notably the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical, Once was poised to make a major leap to Broadway.

The production follows an Irish singer-songwriter named Guy (Steve Kazee), who seems to find his muse in the form of a Czech immigrant named Girl (Cristin Miloti). The story follows the unfolding love story between the two as Guy is about to give up on his career and Girl takes a keen interest in his material. As they spend time with one another, Guy discovers that he may have found his muse and discovers hidden talent he never knew existed. The show features an ensemble cast of 13 actor-musicians, who serve as the onstage orchestra and are able to create a variety of dynamic melodies. With stunning lighting design and an unforgettable score, Once quickly capture the hearts of theatre-goers around the world and experienced a groundswell of support from the critical community.

After opening on March 18, 2012 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, the show quickly began to gain steam in the press and scored big at the Tony Awards. The production was nominated 11 times and brought home eight awards, including Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor (and Actress) in a Musical, Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design. The show would also collect four Drama Desk Awards and net a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theatre Album. With such a roaring start and major critical acclaim, Once looks to be a mainstay on Broadway for the foreseeable future and continues to enthrall audiences night after night.
