The longest running show in the history of Broadway, The Phantom of the Opera, is currently at the Majestic Theatre. The sensation known as Phantom of the Opera began 1910 as gothic novel by Gaston Leroux. It has been made many times over into stage and film productions, the most famous being Andrew Lloyd Webbers’s 1986 musical and the 1925 silent film starring Lon Chaney as the classically frightening Phantom. The story has been so popular over the last ninety-plus years that it continues to be performed all over the world.
The Phantom of the Opera has withdrawn into the shadowy world underneath the stage of the Paris Opera House. Taking pleasure in frightening all who dare enter his world, the Phantom believes he is settling an old score. The Phantom falls in love with a beautiful young singer, Christine. Talented yet unfocused, Christine is relegated to the chorus. The Phantom takes a special interest in the singer and the young woman is able to see the Phantom’s musical genius despite his horrible disfigurement. The acclaimed hit score includes favorites such as “Think of Me”, “Music of the Night”, “Angel of Music”, and the title song. The phenomenally successful score includes music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and original lyrics by Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe.
One of the most popular Broadway shows of all time, The Phantom of the Opera continues to tour the world. This retelling of the classic Faustian story of selling one’s soul to the devil continues to evolve and adapt into the 21st century. Over 80 million people have seen this story come to life on the stage. Winner of the prestigious Tony Award for Best Musical, The Phantom of the Opera is a sure bet to please. Phantom of the Opera 1 1
Not what I expected Although it was an enjoyable show, I have seen the Phantom a few times before, and those prior performances were much better. I took my daughter this time, and a really big downer is that we could not find ANY parking. Also, so many people were late (because of the lack of parking),so there were constant interruptions during the first half, and due to this, the front doors were constantly opened, causing a huge draft while it was subzero temps outside! The Phantom and Christine characters didn't have the strong stage "presence" that I've seen with other actors. He (Chris Mann) was not intimidating or even a bit scary as the Phantom. And I hate to say this, but I would rather see a much taller actor. Christine had a pretty voice, but was a rather meek performer. The costumes were gorgeous, and the thrilling part was when the chandelier (intentionally) dropped, making a booming sound, causing everyone to jump out of their seats. Seriously, I think that was the best part! February 21, 2015
