While the popularity "jukebox musicals" has been uneven, one of the biggest success stories has been the 80's rock musical Rock of Ages. Jukebox musicals have existed for quite some time, but it wasn't until the popularity of the ABBA centered Mamma Mia! that their numbers began exploding. Rock of Ages doesn't choose one band's catalog, instead choosing to incorporate the biggest rock hits of the 80's from a wide variety of artists such as Journey, Poison, and Twisted Sister.

Rock of Ages follows Drew Bowie, a young man who dreams of rock and roll stardom while working as busboy in a club called The Burbon Room, located on LA's famous Sunset Strip. The year is 1987, and a pair of German developers have persuaded the mayor to promote clean living in the Strip, and that means The Burbon Room and businesses like it are going to be torn down. Drew, who has just fallen for a new waitress at the club named Sherrie, decides to save the club by having big name rocker Stacee Jaxx play his last performance with his band at the club.

Drew ends up losing Sherrie and taking Stacee's place at the big show, catapulting him to stardom in the process. Unhappy with success, missing Sherrie, and with the club still under threat of being torn down, Drew and the rest of the cast have to pull it together to make things right, even if it means finding new dreams in the process.

Rock of Ages originally premiered in LA at The Vanguard Hollywood before moving off-Broadway to the New World Stages. The show remained at New World Stages for about four months before opening on Broadway April 7th, 2009 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Rock of Ages spent almost a year at the Brooks Atkinson. It transferred to the Helen Hayes Theatre in March of 2011.

Two national tours of Rock of Ages will be underway by summer of 2011. Between the tours and the Broadway production it's easy to catch this loving tribute to the greatest hits of 80's rock.

Rock the Night Away! This was so much fun! there was so much energy in the audience from the beginning to the end. If you want to have a good time and immerse yourself into the past and rock the night away, come to see this. I felt like a teenager again just singing along to the songs. The music is quite loud so be prepared to join in. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to go see it again with friends. October 30, 2012
