Notes: Most expensive show and most previewed show in Broadway history as of 2011.

Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has earned a number of firsts in Broadway history without ever having opened. The first and most obvious was the production's price tag, which catapulted it to the highest in Broadway history. The second is the number of preview performances, which surpassed the most ever for any production. The story of the production has become a tale to rival the plot of the musical itself.

Numerous changes in cast and crew have been announced since the original production was announced. Original leads Evan Rachel Wood (Mary Jane) and Alan Cumming (Green Goblin) had to bow out as delays mounted. Director Julie Taymor, while sharing directorial credit, was removed from the day-to-day aspects of production and replaced with Philip William McKinley. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who has written for both comics (including Spider-man) and the stage, was called in to revise the original book by Taymor and Glen Berger.

As of April 2011, the plot of the musical is undergoing revisions by Aguirre-Sacasa prior to the opening date in July 2011. The core of the story, Spider-man's origin and romance with sweetheart Mary Jane, will likely remain the same. The musical's version includes the original character Arachne, based on the Greek myth of the same name, a weaver turned into a spider by the jealous goddess Minerva (Athena), essentially the first "spider person." Classic Spider-villian the Green Goblin is also part of the tale.

Despite issues with the performances in the first runs, and numerous injuries, the show boasts some of the biggest box office in Broadway. The financial performance of the show may be partially attributed to a combination of national news coverage and the attention of late night talk show hosts. The eventual shape the show takes will soon be apparent. There's no time like the present to become part of Broadway history and see Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.
