Aziz Ansari has become one of the most popular stand-up comedians currently performing today with his unique blend of high-energy, observational humor that has made him a hit with many different age groups. Ansari got his start performing stand-up while attending New York University, and steadily began to build a following in the comedy community. In 2007, he got his first big break working with fellow comedians Rob Huebel, Jason Woliner and Paul Scheer to create the MTV sketch comedy show, Human Giant. This weekly selection of SNL-type sketches gained a following on MTV and helped him to improve his professional profile.
As Ansari built up his rep at Manhattan comedy clubs and started to receive offers for specials on Comedy Central, he had recurring appearances on the ABC sitcom Scrubs, as well as the HBO series Flight of the Conchords. In 2008, he landed his first major television role with the premiere of NBC's new show, Parks and Recreation. As public employee Tom Haverford, Ansari is a master of wise cracks and slacking around the office, and the role helped to solidify his place in American pop culture. While the show experienced tepid ratings at the beginning, critics began to paint Ansari as a "scene-stealer" and gave him warm reviews as an entertainer to look out for in the future.
In addition to his success on network television, Ansari's stand-up career has blossomed significantly and he now performs in sold-out stadiums and theatres all over the country. In a clear sign of his growing popularity, he was selected to host the 2010 MTV Movie Awards where he performed a musical tribute to the film Avatar in the style of R. Kelly and performed a short film with his Human Giant cast mates.
In addition to his small-screen successes, Ansari has made appearances in many hit comedies over the past few years, such as Funny People, I Love You, Man and Get Him to the Greek. In the midst of this never-ending list of professional opportunities, Ansari hasn't lost his love of standup, and will be touring extensively in the United States throughout much of 2012. Whether he's telling a story from the perspective of his swagger-filled character Taavon, or expressing his love for the awkward nature of R. Kelly, Ansari's stand-up performances are always filled with interesting surprises to the delight of his audiences.
Aziz Ansari 1 1
A Hilarious Time If you like funny...you will love Aziz Ansari. You might have seen some of his "stand up" on Funny People with Adam Sandler, but that doesn't even compare to what his stand up is really like. I got the chance to sit front row when he came into Austin. He played at the Paramount, which is the perfect venue to see a comedian. His cameos on Scrubs and his character on Parks and Recreation give you a little glimpse into his humor, but all I can say is....You have to see him in person!!! July 6, 2011
