Genre: Comedy Show
Hometown: Fritch, Texas
Hits: Blue Collar Comedy Tour
As the cigar-smoking and whiskey-drinking face of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, Ron White has gone from a relatively unknown comic playing in Texas clubs to one of the most successful stand-up comedians in the country. White, a native of Fritch, Texas, has been performing since the mid-'90s and is also known by his nickname "Tater Salad." The nickname comes from a flippant remark he gave to a police officer in Texas, when he asked if White had any aliases. White made up "Tater Salad" on the spot, and the name stuck on his arrest record ever since.
Like many stand-up comedians, White paid his dues on the small town circuit by playing state fairs, bars and small comedy clubs, all while driving his old Nissan pickup truck to gigs. His comedy style has taken the mold of many comedians of old as a compelling storyteller and a quick-witted smart ass who uses stories from the past and present to inform his comedy and appeal to all walks of life. While White's first two comedy albums, Tater Salad aka Busted in Des Moines and Truckstop Comedy, were largely unsuccessful, it wasn't until he hooked up with his friends Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy that his career truly began to take off.
In 2000, the first Blue Collar Comedy Tour kicked off and would prove to be a smashing commercial success, playing in 90 cities by 2003. During 2003, White released Drunk in Public, a massive success that hit No. 2 on the U.S. comedy charts and even peaked at No. 11 on the U.S. country charts. While the rest of the group made the transition into cable television with Comedy Central's Blue Collar TV, White was the only member of the quartet that stayed out and continued to refine his solo comedy act.
In addition to his successful solo career, White stared in a short-lived TV series called The Ron White Show in 2005, and released another successful comedy album, You Can't Fix Stupid in 2006. The record was nominated for a Grammy for Best Comedy Album and hit No. 1 on the U.S. Comedy Charts. In 2009, White released Behavioral Problems, another No. 1 comedy hit. With his legions of fans and millions of albums sold, White is one of the most successful comics to come down the pipe in quite some time and shows no signs of slowing down.
