Preliminary phases of competition began in August, 2007 and will continue into the first part of 2010. The tournament has two parts, the qualification phase and the World Cup Finals. The FIFA Confederations Cup will also occur in South Africa in June 2009 as a precursor to the World Cup in 2010. An estimated 714 million will be watching the 2010 finals.
