2009 World Series

2009 World Series Preview
The 105th MLB World Series gets underway October 28th in Yankees Stadium. The Yankees arrived to the Fall Classic after a six game ALCS against the LA Angels, where they will face returning champions the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies won the NCLS against LA's other team, the Dodgers, in five games, setting up the first World Series title defense in 8 years. The series has been dubbed the "Turnpike Series", as New York and Philadelphia are connected via the Jersey Turnpike. Fans in either city don't have far to travel to see action in either Yankee Stadium or Citizens Bank Park.

This best of 7 series is going to be about the numbers. The Phillies will be going for their second consecutive World Series trophy; they are the first team to return to World Series since the Yanks did it in 2001. For the Yankees the magic number in the 2009 World Series is 27, because if New York wins it will be the Bronx Bombers 27th World Series championship.

There are a number of big name stars in the 2009 World Series. Philadelphia is led on the field by 1st baseman, Ryan Howard, and their vocal shortstop, Jimmy Rollins. The Yankees have enough star power in their infield to light up the New York skyline. Shortstop Derek Jeter is going after a 5th World Series ring, while sluggers Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira are playing for their first. The pitchers that you will hear the most talk about are Cliff Lee, Brad Lidge and Pedro Martinez from the Phillies and CC Sabathia, Mariano Rivera, and AJ Burnett from the Yankees. This World Series certainly will not lack big names because both rosters are chock full of some of the best talent in Major League Baseball. Good luck to the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees – hopefully they make 2009 a memorable World Series.

This is the latest start in World Series history, and will slide into November because of it. If the series goes the distance, the "October Classic" won't be decided until November 5th. Be there to see the defending champion Phillies take on the Yankees in their 40th appearance in the World Series.
