The NCAA Wrestling Championships is the top competition for both individual and team wrestling in the country. There is a point system that crowns the team champions based on the performance of all the individual competitors. The event began in 1928 in Ames, Iowa, and has taken place every year since then outside of 1943-1945 due to World War II. The Oklahoma State Cowboys have the most team championships, winning the title 34 times including the first four years. The Cowboys last won the title in 2006. Right behind OK State is Iowa, who have won the national championship 23 times. Most recently, the Penn State Nittany Lions have been on a tear, winning four consecutive titles from 2011-2014.
In the individual events, only three participants have won four national championships. Pat Smith was the first, being crowned as champion from 1990-1994 while wresting for Oklahoma State. Cael Anderson finished his four-peat 8 years later while wresting for Iowa State. Anderson is currently the Head Coach at Penn State, who has won the last four national championships. Kyle Dake is the most recent four-time winner, winning from 2010-2013 while at Cornell. Score with TicketCity - the place to go for NCAA Wrestling Championships tickets.
