World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has been one of the most popular spectator sports in the United States for decades. In the 1960s, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) was the biggest draw in the country, but as promoters all over the country began to jockey for events, the first true national league came to fruition in 1963 with the founding of the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). This league was led by Vince McMahon Sr. and Toots Mondt, and throughout the 1970s, the federation became popular with regular events at Madison Square Garden. After being renamed the WWF in 1976, the company was sold to Vince McMahon Sr.'s son in 1983, which began the golden age of professional wrestling.

The 1980s were a time of massive growth and publicity for the WWF, as Vince McMahon Jr. realized that wrestling would have to break out of regional matchups and truly reach a national scale. McMahon Jr. went on a massive recruiting mission, signing such wrestlers as Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant and many other future legends. As the WWF began to expand into cable and pay-per-view programming, the very first Wrestlemania in 1985 became a milestone in the federation's growth and would help the WWF jump into network television for the first time. By the time Wrestlemania 3 came around in 1987, 90,000 people packed into the Pontiac Silverdome to watch the action - showing that the federation and pay-per-view format could be a winning formula.

In the late '80s and early '90s, the WWF began its Monday night television war with World Championship Wrestling. The WWF's Monday Night RAW and WCW's Monday Night Nitro were the two biggest weekly events in wrestling and became a bitter rivalry after a few former WWF stars defected to the new league. However, WWF would come out on top of the ratings war and would purchase the WCW in 2001. This prompted a name change to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and a significant milestone in the federation's growth.

Today, the WWE continues to be one of the most popular spectator sports in America today, with annual events like SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, WrestleMania, Hell in a Cell and many other themed events. With television and pay-per-view ratings still at consistent levels, the WWE shows no signs of slowing down and continues to add legions of fans each year.
