2018 Raiders Season Preview

The Raiders were back last year, and with a vengeance. It was their first time notching a 12-win season since 2002, and while this is not a betting preview, word on the Vegas strip is this team is getting lots of action as a dark horse Super Bowl contender. When Derek Carr is healthy, the Raider quarterback is as good as it gets. Maybe not at a Brady or Rodgers level, but right up there. The Oakland offense was devastating last year and while they lost their leading rusher, Latavius Murry, to the Vikings in the off-season, they brought Marshawn Lynch out of retirement who is expected to unleash Beast Mode Part II after having sat out 2016. The draft was somewhat controversial as Oak-town selected Ohio State cornerback Gareon Conley at number 11. Now, talent wise, he could have gone higher. Problem is, Mr. Conley has been embroiled in a lawsuit, and if charged, would render this one of the worst first-round gambles in recent memory. Picks this high change franchises. Blowing it would really hurt.

The Raiders made up for it (somewhat) by snagging safety/cornerback Obi Melifonwu out of Connecticut a little further on. Obi is colloquially known as a swiss army knife, able to literally play almost any position on defense. Many had him pegged to go in the early 20s. He dropped to 56 and the Raiders were there with open arms. Add in running back Elijah Hood from North Carolina and he and Beast Mode should give a healthy Carr all the help this offense needs to propel them to the promise-land. It would be the first Super Bowl appearance in over a decade, let’s see if that Raider magic is still alive. TicketCity is the place to go for Oakland Raiders tickets. 2016 Oakland Raiders Season Preview

The Raiders are once again working on making each season better than the last one. The 2015 Raiders season was a big improvement over their 2014 season as they finished with a record of 7-9 and 3rd in the AFC West. The Raiders haven’t been in the playoffs since 2002, where they went all the way to the Super Bowl only to lose to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Raiders offense is in the hands of Derek Carr as he continues to prove himself as one of the best up-and-coming quarterbacks in the NFL. The Raiders are hoping that their newest first round 2016 NFL draft pick, safety Karl Joseph, will give their defense a boost. After last season’s improvement, it is very possible that the Raiders could be playoff contenders for the 2016 season.

2015 Oakland Raiders Season Preview

The Oakland Raiders struggled again in 2014, losing 13 games, including 10 in a row to start the season. But young quarterback Derrick Carr improved as the season went on, and the team posted 3 wins in the final 6 games of last season, building optimism and hype coming into the 2015 season. The Raiders were active in the offseason, looking for targets for Carr, and brought in Michael Crabtree, and used their first round draft pick to pull in Amari Cooper. The addition of these two receivers gives Oakland possibly the best receiver duo in the AFC West, and should help lengthen the field for the Latavius Murray and the running game. The Raiders also drafted highly touted defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. to play alongside Justin Tuck, in what should be a greatly increased pass rush in 2015. The Oakland Raiders have a difficult schedule in 2015, playing 8 games against teams that made the playoffs in 2014. While it may be a bit premature to boast the Raiders as contenders in a packed AFC West, they have certainly made some great moves, and should be drastically improved team in 2015. Top non-division games at home against the Ravens, and Packers.

2014 Oakland Raiders Season Preview

The Raiders are coming off a tough season in 2013, but they’ve brought in a lot of new personnel to try and turn it around this time. Dennis Allen got his man in former Houston QB Matt Schaub, and if he can keep the Pick-6s down, Schaub is a very serviceable quarterback. The Raiders also drafted a long-term option at QB in Derek Carr from Fresno State should Schaub not work out. Lining up behind Schaub will be Maurice Jones-Drew, the former Pro Bowl running back for the Jaguars. Jones-Drew hasn’t had much production recently, but that could be attributed to the total lack of production from the entire offensive squad the Jags had. Any team in the AFC West will have a tough schedule, and it’s no different for Oakland. They’ll start the season at MetLife against the Jets before heading home to face Schaub’s former team in the Texans. Week 3 and they’re right back on the road to face the Patriots in Foxborough. The Raiders will have key home games against the Chargers, Broncos, 49ers and Chiefs, as well as tough road contests in Denver and Super Bowl winning Seattle.

2013 Oakland Raiders Season Preview

After a disappointing 2012 season, the Raiders made significant changes to both sides of the ball in order to improve in 2013. First and foremost, the Raiders made two trades involving quarterbacks, acquiring Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks and trading Carson Palmer away to the Arizona Cardinals. Regardless of the change in quarterback, the Oakland offense will still hinge on the health of star running back Darren McFadden. Defensively, the Raiders made a point of improving the secondary. With the 12th overall pick in the NFL Draft the Raiders selected Houston corner back D.J. Hayden. In free agency Oakland further fortified the secondary by signing Tracy Porter, Mike Jenkins and former Raider and Green Bay Packer Charles Woodson. With these changes, the Raiders should produce a much better product on the field this season.

2011 Oakland Raiders Season Preview

The Oakland Raiders had one of the strangest seasons in NFL history last year, going 6-0 in their own division yet failing to make the playoffs. Even still, Oakland improved dramatically relative to their performance through much of the last decade, and appears poised to return to the post season for the first time since 2002.The biggest difference in the Oakland offense was the emergence of Jason Campbell as a reliable quarterback. If the former Redskin can once again hold his own, the rest of the offense should fall in place. Last season also saw a breakout year for running back Darren McFadden, who rushed for over 1,100 yards. Wide receiver Jacoby Ford should be a reliable target for Campbell as well.As for the defense, the Raiders will have to replace one of the best defensive backs in the league after Nnamdi Asomugha left due to free agency. Still, they have some young talent on that side of the ball, highlighted primarily by linebacker Rolando McClain, who had a standout rookie year in 2010.

2010 Oakland Raiders Season Preview

Although they are among the most historically successful franchises in NFL history, the last several years have not been kind to the Oakland Raiders. A string of losing seasons and instability at both head coach and quarterback have left fans restless. Ownership recently dismissed former first round draft pick JaMarcus Russell, and the silver and black are looking for a fresh start. With Russell's departure, the Raiders picked up former Washington Redskin Jason Campbell, who will certainly be a step up. With more stability at quarterback, the offense may be able to more productive than in years past. Darren McFadden enters his third year as Oakland's running back and will be looking to improve on a year where he was hampered by injury. Tight end Zach Miller will provide Campbell with a solid target, and while receivers Chaz Schilens and Darrius Heyward-Bey are both relatively inexperienced, they have a wealth of skill.Much like the offense, the defense is a work in progress. The Raiders have a number of talented players, especially in the secondary. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is one of the best at his position in the NFL, and strong safety Tyvon Branch is a threat covering passes as well as returning punts. Former New England Patriot Richard Seymour anchors a defensive line that has the potential to shut down opposing offenses.

2009 Oakland Raiders Season Preview

The Oakland Raiders have been somewhat of an enigma the last few seasons. You can count on their fans to show up in force at home games, which generally makes Oakland one of the toughest road games on the schedule. Aside from that it is hard to know what to expect from the Raiders these days. For 2009 it appears the Raiders will still be in rebuilding mode behind their young quarterback, JaMarcus Russell, and a slew of other talented players. The question is whether Coach Tom Cable can get the Silver & Black organized enough to make a run at the AFC West division? Watching the Arizona Cardinals run in 2008 has to give hope to Raiders fans that they too can turn things around, and do it this season. So watch out for the Oakland Raiders in 2009 because they are unpredictable, which makes them a dangerous opponent.

2008 Oakland Raiders Season Preview

The Oakland Raiders will be one of the most exciting teams to watch this coming season. They are a young team with a young future franchise quarterback in JaMarcus Russell, star QB for a strong LSU team; and the youngest coach in the NFL in Lane Kiffin. The Raiders appear to have all the elements required for a strong team and it will be exciting to watch how they fare. Visitors at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum will be lucky to see some the future stars of the NFL as they break out this year, as well as experiencing some of the wildest and most intense fan bases in all of professional sports.
