The Irwin Tools Night Race is held in Bristol Tenn., at the Bristol Motor Speedway, a track that has been dubbed, “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” Besides the Irwin Tools Night Race, the Food City 500 is the other NASCAR Sprint Series race to run at Bristol. The race, held annually in August, is the most difficult race to get tickets for, and for that fact, the toughest in any sporting event. This track is the shortest of the NASCAR tracks, which equates to flared tempers and “paint swapping.” This is the one race you don’t want to miss. 2016 Irwin Tools Night Race Preview
With the NASCAR season half over by August, the Chase for the Cup is tight and patience is running short. The Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Speedway is noted as being “The Last Great Colosseum,” where modern-day gladiators do battle in armored stock cars. Because the race is on a Saturday night, qualifying and practice starts together on Friday.
In 2013, Matt Kenseth held off Kasey Kahne in what should be described as nice guy racing. Kahne knew he couldn’t pass Kenseth without taking them both out, so he held back. Kenseth ran all 500 miles, 266.5 laps at an average speed of 90.2 MPH in 2:57:07, winning $328,466.
Irwin Tools Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway Address: 151 Speedway Blvd, Bristol, Tennessee, 37620
Bristol Motor Speedway is the 8th largest racing venue in the world, despite its short length. The capacity at Bristol is 160,000 and has stadium style seating, so there isn’t a bad seat in the house. What adds to the excitement of Bristol is the track has a 27-degree bank, which makes for faster speeds, yet slower than most tracks, but where “paint swapping” is almost inevitable. It is an oval track measuring .53 miles around and is concrete, unlike most others that are asphalt. Pit stops are a challenge at Bristol. There are two pit areas; the front straight and the back straight; drivers on the front enter turn two and exit turn three, those on the back enter turn four exit turn one, forcing drivers to make a lap before pitting.
Bristol has a second nickname, “Thunder Valley,” named so for the drag strip that lies in close proximity to the track. NHRA hosts the Full Throttle Drag Racing event there annually. Coming in 2016, a college football game between University of Tennessee and Virginia Tech will play out in what is being billed as “Battle of Bristol, College Football’s Biggest Football Game EVER.” Bristol Motor Speedway is notorious for yellow flags, paint scrapping and bad pit stops, TicketCity can get you to the race that will have the most action all year!
This unusual racetrack has unusual stadium style seating, which means grandstands all the way around the half-mile track. The only racetrack to have this feature and with the added bonus, for fans, of the pit area being on both the back and front straights. The seating capacity is 160,000, and with Bristol being the loudest track, it is the best sporting event to attend. The newly retitled grandstands and skyboxes are named after NASCAR champions; you can choose to sit high in the new Wallace grandstands, or Kulwicki Terrace. There are the Yarbrough and Petty grandstands that sit lower toward the track and across from the front straight pit area. When sitting in the lower grandstands, wear clear glasses, ladies tie your hair back because the wind from the cars comes whipping through, but most important, wear earplugs because Bristol is the loudest track of all NASCAR!
