2013 AutoZone Liberty Bowl Preview

The 2013 Liberty Bowl will be played on Tuesday, December 31st at 4 PM between the Rice Owls and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Rice won their first conference title in over 50 years, taking the C-USA by storm with a 7-1 conference record and winning 10 games overall. The Owls lost to Texas A&M and Houston early on in the season, but then won 9 of their last 10 to take the title. Charles Ross rushed for 1252 yards and 14 TDs for the Owls, while Taylor McHargue passed for 17 TDs of his own while adding another five on the ground. A win in a bowl game would be a very big deal for all Rice players and fans alike.

Mississippi State had big aspirations this season, but stumbled a bit right out of the gate. An opening-game loss to Oklahoma State in Texas where they could only manage a field goal was troubling, while losses to Auburn and LSU put the Bulldogs at 2-3 to start the season. Two overtime wins to end the season, including a big win over Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl, made the team bowl eligible at 6-6.
