2014 BBVA Compass Bowl Preview
The Houston Cougars will meet the Vanderbilt Commodores in the BBVA Compass Bowl on January 4th, 2014, in Birmingham, AL. Legion Field will play host to for both school, coming from the SEC and AAC. The Cougars finished 8-4 this season, but could have done much better as they lost all four games by seven points or less. It was a step in the right direction for Houston, going through a down year after Kevin Sumlin led the school to a 12-1 record and a TicketCity Bowl appearance in 2011.
On the other side, Vanderbilt feels a little cheated in the bowl selection process and will have a chip on their shoulder to prove they were unrightfully passed over. Vandy had a big win over rival Tennessee and won last year’s Music City Bowl over NC State. The star on offense is Jordan Matthews, who has 1334 receiving yards on 107 receptions. It should be a good game for the teams as well as the fans in Birmingham.

2011 BBVA Compass Bowl Preview:
The Big East and SEC are going to be showcased in the BBVA Compass Bowl when the Pittsburgh Panthers and Kentucky Wildcats battle in Birmingham. The clash, which is the only game that Saturday before the BCS National Championship Game, is a highlight of some of the best individual talent in the NCAA.
Kentucky's season was a grab bag of highs (beating SEC-West Champ South Carolina) and lows (a 2-6 SEC record), but their resolve kept strong thanks to their top notch passing offense led by the duo of quarterback Mike Hartline and all-around player Randall Cobb. Hartline threw for over 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns, and Cobb—a supposed wide receiver—ran and caught 12 touchdowns and ranked second in the country with 2,192 all-purpose yards.
Pittsburgh's season has been mildly disappointing, considering their talent coming in to 2010. Running back Dion Lewis rushed for 956 yards and 12 scores while wide receiver Joe Baldwin's 15.6 average yards per catch have him mentioned aloud in the list of players headed to the NFL draft this year (along with Kentucky's Cobb). Their defense survived many injuries to reigning Big East defensive POY Greg Romeus, but with Hartline and Cobb attacking their 22nd-ranked unit, it will be interesting to see which unit will bring their team a BBVA Compass Bowl win.
