One of the oldest areas in the United States, Flushing, Queens, is among the most unique spots in New York City. With a distinct cultural heritage combined with a surprisingly passionate collection of sports fans, Flushing is certainly worth a visit.

When you think of athletics in Flushing, you can't help but immediately think of the New York Mets. While they may be overshadowed by their cross-town rivals the Yankees, the Mets have some great history of their own. Since they were founded in 1962, the Mets have called Flushing home, and are tenants of one of the newest ball parks in the entire league, Citi Field.

Opened in 2009, Citi Field comfortably sets more than 41,000 spectators and features a slew of lush amenities that make it one of the premiere places to catch a game. In its few years of existence, the stadium has hosted some of the most iconic singers of the last several decades, including a three concert series by Paul McCartney.

Mets games aren't the only high-profile athletic events that take place in the city however. The US Open takes place each year from August into September at the nearby Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, one of the most iconic tennis venues in the country.

Though it has a rich sports tradition, Flushing also has many historical landmarks thanks to the fact that it is more than 360 years old. Among the most recognizable is the Flushing Town Hall, which was built in 1862 and its unique design serves as a window into a bygone era. Additionally, it is home to the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts, an affiliate of the Smithsonian.

However, if you're not looking to take in some historic landmarks, there are still plenty of other options available at your disposal. Though not as big as its counterpart in the Bronx, the Queens Zoo is always a good place to visit and features some of the rarest creatures from North and South America. Before you leave you may also want to take a swing by the location of the 1964-1965 World's Fair, which is still home to the symbol of the event, the Unisphere, which remains one of the most easily recognizable structures more than 40 years later.
