While Providence is usually not mentioned in the same sentence as larger Northeastern cities like Boston, Hartford or Philadelphia, in many ways the Rhode Island capitol draws on influences from many of these locales to be a welcome surprise in the nation's smallest state. Sports fans who find themselves in Providence will find a fan scene that is closely tied to Boston sports, but still has its own unique charm.

The largest venue for concerts, sporting events and other large-scale exhibitions is the Dunkin' Donuts Center, which is the current home of the American Hockey League's (AHL) Providence Bruins. This squad serves as the primary developmental roster for the National Hockey League's (NHL) Boston Bruins. These games are well-supported by the Providence faithful and many are eager to see their hometown favorites move up to the big time. The city is also home to a number of colleges, such as the University of Rhode Island and Brown University, which ensures a packed schedule of men's and women's athletics in the Big East and Ivy League.

In addition to the impressive Dunkin' Donuts Center, Providence boasts an eclectic group of theatres and other performing arts venues that are the true heart and soul of the city's theatre community. The historic Providence Performing Arts Center, originally opened as Loew's Movie Palace in 1928, has been extensively remodeled to recapture the classic charm of the old movie house. The redesigned space is now a popular spot for musicals, legitimate theatre and other large-scale productions. Columbus Theatre, another historic venue in the Federal Hill area, is another cultural hot spot that shows a variety of independent films and hosts film festivals in several genres.

Providence's beautiful locale in the Narragansett Bay, coupled with its ideal location in the middle of New England have made it busy place at any time of the year. Thankfully, there are more than enough entertaining diversions for travelers to explore during their stay in one of the brightest spots in the Ocean State.
