Sports in San Diego
When it comes to sports in San Diego, one team dominates the scene: the Chargers. Ever since they started playing in the city in 1961, they have been a favorite among nearly all residents of the city. Though they have yet to capture a Super Bowl title, the Bolts, as they are commonly known, have been one of the most consistent teams in the NFL.
The Chargers also have one of the most historic venues in the NFL. Qualcomm Stadium has been the Chargers' home since the mid '60s when it opened as San Diego Stadium. While other new stadiums have sprung up across the league, the Chargers' venue retained its classic charm and remains one of the toughest places for opposing teams to play. Furthermore, it regularly hosts a pair of college football bowl games, the Holiday Bowl and the Poinsettia Bowl.
Though the Chargers are beloved, they are certainly not the only team to call San Diego home. The Padres of the MLB are also stationed in the city, and play their home games at one of the most picturesque stadiums in the league, Petco Park. Opened in 2004, the venue offers a stunning view of downtown San Diego and is a great place to take in a game.
