San Jose is perhaps California's most underrated city, as many people don't realize its significance. As the third largest city in the state, this metropolitan area is part of the technologically-advanced and quickly-growing Silicon Valley. Originating as a Spanish colony of Nuevo, California, the city was initially a farming community that was designed to support the military installations at San Francisco and Monterey. After California officially joined the ranks of the United States, San Jose actually became its first capital city. It wasn't until the 1950s that San Jose finally started experiencing significant growth, turning into the sprawling urban center that we know today - which was a result of Silicon Valley's computer boom in the '80s.

This massive expansion made San Jose a worthy target for many sports teams, including the NHL Sharks, who play at the SAP Center. Hockey is likely the most popular sport in the area, which is also home to the SaberCats (AFL). One thing that could confuse a few baseball fans is the fact that there are two teams in the area that are referred to as Giants. Of course, there's the San Francisco Giants for the major leagues - but there's also a San Jose team. The main difference is that the latter plays for the minor leagues. Football fans and tailgaters can also have their fair share of fun at the Spartan Stadium, which is home to San Jose State University.

Those who would rather experience some culture might be surprised to realize that San Jose is extremely popular when it comes to traditional music, as the San Jose Jazz Festival is held every year in the center of town. There are plenty of other fun pastimes for first-time visitors, especially since entertainment is one thing the city is known for. Aside from comedy clubs and dance studios, there is also a sprawling Victorian mansion that many claim is haunted - Winchester Mystery House. Kids can also have a healthy dose of fun at the Raging Waters park, which is the largest water park in California.

Those who think that San Francisco is the heart and soul of northern California might be surprised to realize how many luxuries they can enjoy in the neighboring city of San Jose.
