While it is certainly most recognizable as the capital of the United States, Washington, D.C. is much more than just the city that plays host to politics. A rich history coupled with a vibrant cultural center make the tiny district nestled against the Potomac River a favorite destination among vacationers across the country. With enough things to do and see, the city definitely requires a return visit (or several) to fully take in.

The largest draw of D.C. is the abundance of history throughout the city. At almost every corner there is a memorial, monument or statue commemorating an important time of the country's past. It's hard not to take a trip there without stopping by the National Mall. This expansive park is located in the heart of the city and includes some of the most iconic structures in the U.S. In one fell swoop you can take in the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and Capitol Building. If you're lucky enough to stop by in spring, don't leave without checking out the beautiful cherry blossoms that will be in full bloom next to the Jefferson Memorial.

If you want to catch a game while you're in town, Washington, D.C. is also home to a slew of professionals sports teams, so no matter what time of year you visit you’ll be able to attend a game. The Washington Nationals play their home games at nearby Nationals Park, one of the most modern parks in the MLB. The Washington Redskins play at FedEx Field and you can always count on it being an amazing experience. Both the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals play at the Verizon Center. Washington D.C. also hosts a MLS team, D.C. United, who are now the primary users of RFK Stadium.

Washington D.C. has several music venues and a music scene that draws crowds to show with small local acts to large national touring acts. The 9:30 Club is known for bringing in big names and giving fans an up close and intimate concert experience, which is why it has been named as one of the top music venues in the country. DAR Constitution Hall is a popular venue for larger acts that pass through town. The National Theatre is a top spot for a variety of live stage productions.

Spring in Washington D.C. is always exciting as baseball season begins, and the NHL season comes to an end. The Washington Capitals are almost always Stanley Cup contenders, having made the playoffs 8 out of the past 10 years.

Summer in Washington D.C.

Summer is baseball season in Washington D.C. The Washington Nationals have called Nationals Park home since 2008.
