The Appalachian State Mountaineers basketball team is one of the rising programs in the basketball rich State of North Carolina. Over the years Appalachian State basketball has racked up an unprecedented 15 conference regular season championships spanning 3 conferences. The mountaineers have also made trips to the NCAA Tournament in 1979 and 2000. In 2010, ASU made its farthest-ever postseason run reaching the Semifinals of the CBI tournament. The Appalachian State University Mountaineers basketball team plays their home games at the Holmes Center in Boone, North Carolina. The Holmes Center has been the home of Mountaineers basketball since 2000, and can seat over 8,000 fans. The arena is named after George M. Holmes, a distinguished graduate of Appalachian State. The Holmes Center replaces the historic Varsity Gym that had been home to the Mountaineers for decades. The arena also serves as the home to the Mountaineers volleyball and indoor track and field teams. With a capacity over 8,000, the Holmes Center is one of the largest venues in the Sun Belt Conference. When the venue is at capacity it is rocking with energy and easily among the loudest in the conference.
