Baylor Bears Preview History

2011 Baylor Basketball Preview

Last year was a bit of a disappointment for the Waco, Texas-based Bears. Despite a fantastic, Elite Eight showing the year before and pre-season buzz surrounding their incoming freshman Perry Jones, Baylor underachieved and missed the NCAAs completely. However, a new year brings new opportunities for the Bears, and despite the loss of All-Big 12 player LaceDarius Dunn, Scott Drew's club is looking to make a return run at the NCAA Championship.

The loss of Dunn will be offset by a number of great front court players like Jones, J'Mison Morgan and Qunicys Miller and Acy. Jones, specifically, will be the focal point of the team, coming in as the Big 12 Player of the Year, possibly an award won for not entering the NBA Draft last year where he would have been selected as a top lottery pick. Small forward Miller comes in with his high school teammate shooting guard Duce Bello to give the Bears a strong inside-outside game that has been simmering for more than half a decade.

While they have an outstanding front five, what will push Baylor to surpassing last year's level will be its outstanding bench. Acy, in particular, was named Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year in 2010-11. Perry Jones will be the focal point for defenses, but it will be a strong overall team effort that will allow the Bears to get the honey of another tournament run in March.

2010 Baylor Basketball Preview

There’s something electric about being there when it happens to your team. It can be a high as great as winning a championship, or as subtle as knowing they’ve turned the corner. For the Baylor Bears, last year’s run to the Elite Eight was a sign that nothing but good time were ahead for them, and the rest of college basketball better watch out. The 10,000-plus fans at every game this season in The Ferrell Center know this, which means the cheers will shake the arena’s golden dome every game. With TicketCity, you can be there to watch these Bears continue their attack on the Big 12 and make another run at the Final Four.

When coach Scott Drew took over a program that was at coming off sanctions and tragedy, people knew there was nowhere to go but up. However, very few thought that six years later, the team would be seconds away from a Final Four berth. After sniffing that title game, the only “up” left is capturing the NCAA championship. The good news is that LaceDarius Dunn, last year’s Big 12 leading scorer, has returned, unlike their leading rebounder Ekpe Udoh, who now plays for the Golden State Warriors. Dunn returns to a team bringing in its highest-ranked recruit ever in Perry Jones, a forward who Drew believes can replace the rebounds they lost when Udoh left for the NBA. Will that also make up losing seniors Tweety Carter and Losh Lomers in a conference where the top teams are returning four of five starters? We’ll just have to wait and watch every exciting game that these Bears come out of their caves to fight.
